June 29, Sunday, 10 a.m.

Wild Long Island and southeast New York State are home to many beautiful orchid rarities. Come to the museum and meet these beauties and afterwards, if you choose, go out to Napeague with Dave to see some of them in their native habitat.

Dave Taft, artist, and orchid enthusiast, is Conservation Chair for the Greater New York Orchid Society. He has served as the Site Manager of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and is presently an Assistant Superintendent with the National Park Service.

Had a nice time at this event, even with the mosquitos and ticks!. The museum is a very interesting place. Dave gave his lecture and slide show and we caravanned out to the field. Along with Dave, Jim Ash, SoFo Director, found and identified Pogonia ophioglossoides and Calopogon tuberosus for us to see. Jim said he has visited that area annually for the last 30 years. The Pogonia ophioglossoides was in PEAK flowering and lining the pines of the first area we visited like someone planted a deliberate border of them, really stunning. Saw fellow member Pete from Wantagh there with his family too. Here are some images:
